“I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent".
I do not justified violence in any form, any where, be it one in Kashmere, in Mumbai, in the streets or in domestic sphere. However a recent discussion with a housemate of mine made me ponder over the perception of violence among a man and a woman and misunderstood concept of woman equality. The question was simple, if a woman can hit a man why cant a man retort to that violence? My friend answers because it s not good to raise hands on girls. The statement was probably and unconsciously backed by the fact that women are fairer sex(wonder the word fair connotes the color of the skin or the quality of being fair and just), or may be weaker sex. In cases where a woman hits a man first, she may not be socially weak or economically lesser, yes, she may still lack physical strength. What perturbs my mind is that why is violence not condemned because he who fights monster become one during the fight. Why do we equate violence with gender, why is a man hitting another man, or a woman cat fighting with another woman not as grotesque and condemned as one between man and a woman. Well, unmatched physical strength may rebut this argument but then what about a woman hitting with a glass and man slapping her back....
What I insinuate is that if we talk of form violence, it must be condemned in any form (be it between men or women,or between the same sex)and if we talk of substance, it must be objectively determined, not in the light of preconceived notion. Concept of equality should not override what is just and reasonable. Physical violence is unjustified between any sex, any age group and in any society. A woman should not be hit back for violence is not the right retort and not because she is of fairer sex. Especially for those women who have risen to the equal platform, have been introduced to equal opportunities. "Do not hit me for I am meek, do it for it is act of a weak, for when you raise your hand on me you fail to be a man you wanted to be...man of wisdom and reason."
"Men seem unable to feel equal to women: they must be superior or they are inferior”
