In a recent house party at a friend's place I met a few people. The one who offered some recipe for writing this blog was this suave cosmopolitan dame from Delhi. Pretty as pearl and fragile as a feather, to much of my surprise, she worked for no fashion magazine but was a social worker.
Recently graduated from one of the elite schools in London, she is back to India to station herself in one of the remotest corners in Bihar for work. During the conversation that we were having in our own corners..she said something that caught my attention... "far as I get remunerated well, I do not have problem in getting stationed at some place like" Bihar", for some time." So blatant came these words that the disinterest in the work seemed clear (or may be it is the new league of social workers who followed the bra burning feminists.)
So true.. money is all that matters to most of us.. and worst of it is that it matters most to those who into public work.. be it doctors, social workers, teachers and yes we lawyers.. we are ready to go to any far of unpleasant land, to work with unclean people in most austere circumstance, just for money. Every thing has been monetized.... education... justice system, medical profession... almost everything.. We are living in times where a hospital staffs is more concerned about your comfort than the cure. We work only for money!
There is nothing right or wrong about it. Mom always said to me "you first learn to live without money and then ever say money doesn't matter... .. money always matters".
Money always matters.. and in toady's time we work only for money. We live a life of contradictions where are talk the talk but never walk the talk. We get paid for our work. It doesn't matter whether we believe in our work, our thoughts or whether we are proud of it.
We can easily brush away beggars at street lights, with the most bitter words and looks, while driving back from a conference on rehabilitation of beggars. We may refuse to even acknowledge the street children on the roads picking rags while writing a whole thesis on child rights and their protection. We can hold talks and shows and debates on NDTV abusing those politicians during the day and passing off smiles for a brief acquaintance with them in the evening.... Its all about money honey.. and some fame!
In history we read about two persons who lived complete opposite lives..one who chose to live among the poor to work for them.. the other who developed his socialist ideas sitting in his luxurious chamber. What is the difference.....Did they live a life of contradictions?...No.. they didn't... they were true to their beliefs and they believed in what they did...
